On Saturday, September 14, Maya Angelou will speak at UNCG as part of the University Performing Arts Series. Dr. Angelou will read from a selection of her literary work and speak to the UNCG community about her extraordinary life. The evening will also include performances by UNCG School of Music, Theatre, and Dance faculty, alumni, and students.
Maya Angelou lived in Winston-Salem and taught at Wake Forest University. She is a recipient of the North Carolina Award, which recognizes achievement by North Carolinians in the fields of literature, science, fine arts, and public service. Book Talk with James McPherson
Historian James McPherson will be at UNCG on Friday, September 6 at 4:00 pm in the Jackson Library Reading Room. Dr. McPherson is a leading expert on the Civil War and will speak about his latest book, War on the Waters. He'll also be speaking at the BOOKMARKS festival in Winston-Salem that weekend.

World Book Night
April 23 is World Book Night! This annual event is celebrated throughout the US and is designed to help spread a love of reading. Volunteers distribute paperback books to people who usually don't read, encouraging them to give reading a chance. It's estimated that over half a million books will be given away!

Kathryn Stripling Byer
Last night, former NC poet laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer gave a reading of some of her poetry at UNCG's Jackson Library. Students, faculty, and fans from the community had the opportunity to hear some of her new poems from her latest collection, Descent. Although born and raised in Georgia, Byer has a long history in North Carolina. She has studied and taught at several North Carolina universities, including UNCG. She currently lives in Cullowhee.
