The state of North Carolina sent more soldiers than other state in the South. Consequently, they also lost more men. In "North Carolina Remembers Gettysburg" by Michael C. Hardy, one can read the diaries and letters of many of these brave soldiers. Hardy is an award-winning Civil War historian who has written much about North Carolina's role in this war, including the aptly titled "North Carolina in the Civil War".
