Nantahala National Forest

What place in North Carolina is home to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Panthertown Valley, and some of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River?  The answer lies in the Nantahala National Forest, one of four national forests within the state.  This forest is also the largest of the four national forests.  It comprises much of the southwestern corner of North Carolina.

Author and naturalist Marci Spencer wrote about the history and creation of this forest in the aptly titled "Nantahala National Forest."  Want to explore this area on foot?  Prolific nature writer and outdoor enthusiast Johnny Molloy highlights dozens of trails and locations in "Hiking North Carolina's National Forests," which focuses on a wide variety of trails in all four of NC's National Forests.
